Mirrorless vs. DSLR: Choosing Your First Camera

The mirrorless-versus-DSLR debate matters less than it used to, but the two systems still differ in ways worth understanding before you buy.

How They Differ

DSLRs use a mirror and optical viewfinder to show you the scene directly through the lens. Mirrorless cameras skip the mirror entirely, relying on an electronic viewfinder or rear screen that shows a digital preview — including a live look at exposure and white balance before you shoot.

Size and Weight

Without a mirror box and pentaprism, mirrorless bodies are generally smaller and lighter than equivalent DSLRs, though lenses for both systems can be similarly sized.

Autofocus

Modern mirrorless cameras generally lead in autofocus speed and subject tracking, particularly for video and fast action, since they use on-sensor focusing across the whole frame.

Battery Life

DSLRs typically get more shots per charge since the optical viewfinder draws no power. Mirrorless cameras rely on power-hungry electronic displays, so carrying a spare battery is worth it.

Lens Selection

DSLR lens ecosystems are more mature and often cheaper on the used market. Mirrorless lens lineups have grown enormously in recent years and now cover nearly every focal length and price point.

The Practical Answer

For most beginners today, a mirrorless camera is the more future-proof choice, since manufacturers are investing primarily in mirrorless development. That said, a used DSLR remains an excellent, affordable way to learn the fundamentals.
