Self-Portraiture: Getting Creative Behind Your Own Lens

Self-portraiture forces you to be both photographer and subject, which is trickier than it sounds, but a few tools and techniques make it manageable.

Set Up Your Focus First

Place a stand-in object where you plan to stand, and focus on it manually or with single-point autofocus. Then switch to manual focus so the camera doesn't hunt when you step into frame.

Use a Remote or Timer

A wireless remote gives you full control over timing, which beats racing back to your mark before a countdown runs out. Many cameras also support smartphone app triggers for the same effect.

Tripod Stability Matters More Than Usual

Since you can't hold the camera steady yourself, invest in a solid tripod, especially for slower shutter speeds or windy conditions.

Direct Yourself Like a Model

Think about the same things you'd tell a subject: chin angle, shoulder position, where to look. Take far more frames than you think you need, since self-portraits typically require more takes to nail expression and pose.

Use Props and Environment

Interacting with your surroundings reads more natural than standing stiffly and staring at the lens.

Review shots on your camera's screen as you go, and adjust your setup rather than settling for close enough.
