Off-Camera Flash: Elevating Your Portrait Lighting

On-camera flash tends to flatten faces and cast harsh shadows directly behind your subject. Moving that same flash off-camera is one of the biggest upgrades you can make to portrait work.

Why Move the Light?

Off-axis lighting creates shadow and dimension on the face, mimicking the directional quality of window light or sunlight rather than the flat, head-on look of built-in flash.

Basic Setup

A single flash on a light stand, triggered wirelessly, positioned at roughly a 45-degree angle to your subject and slightly above eye level, is the classic starting point — often called Rembrandt or short lighting depending on exact placement.

Modify the Light

A shoot-through umbrella or softbox spreads the light source, softening shadows and making it far more flattering than a bare flash. Bigger, closer light sources produce softer light — a principle worth memorizing.

Balance Flash With Ambient Light

Set your ambient exposure first using shutter speed and aperture, then bring in flash power to light your subject. This keeps backgrounds from going pitch black, a common beginner mistake.
